Bigger is easier to paint, not harder: the number of regions follows the colour count, so a larger canvas gives each region more room for a brush rather than adding more of them. For a face, 40 × 50 cm is the smallest we would suggest.

Paints mixed, not guessed
Every colour arrives pre-mixed in its own numbered pot, matched to the canvas. Nothing has to be blended by eye, and there is spare in each pot for the bits everyone paints twice.
You see it before you buy it
The preview above redraws your photo using exactly the number of paints the kit carries. If a face is going to come out blocky at 24 colours, you find out now rather than in three weeks.

24 Colours
Broad, poster-like blocks. Strong subjects with clear light hold up well; faces read more stylised than lifelike.
The quickest to finish, and the easiest to keep tidy — regions are large enough to fill in confidently.
36 ColoursRecommended

48 Colours
The most detail we cut. Fine gradients, hair and reflections survive, and the finished piece reads closest to the photograph.

HOW IT GOES
Three Habits That Make It Easy
Nobody tells you these, and they are the difference between a relaxing evening and a fiddly one.
- STEP 01
Start with the big regions
Find the largest number on the canvas and fill every region carrying it before you open another pot. Working one colour at a time is what keeps the pots clean and the edges sharp.
- STEP 02
Work dark to light
Darks first, then lights over them. Acrylic is opaque, so a light colour will cover a dark one that has strayed — the other way round takes several coats.
- STEP 03
Leave the fine work until last
Eyes, highlights and the thinnest outlines go in at the end with the fine brush, once everything around them is dry and you can rest your hand.

Painting By Numbers Questions
Do I need to be able to paint?
No. Every region on the canvas carries the number of the pot that fills it, so the drawing and the colour mixing — the two hard parts — are already done. What is left is filling in carefully, which is a matter of patience rather than skill.
Which size should I choose?
Bigger is easier, which surprises people. The number of regions follows the colour count, not the canvas, so a larger canvas gives each region more room for a brush instead of adding more of them. On a 20 × 20 cm canvas at 48 colours some regions are a couple of millimetres across. For a face, 40 × 50 cm is the smallest we would suggest.
What do the colour options actually change?
How finely your photograph is broken up. 24 colours gives broad, poster-like blocks; 48 keeps fine gradients, hair and reflections. More colours means a closer likeness and considerably more hours. 36 suits most photographs, which is why it is the default — but the preview shows you your own picture at each setting, so trust that rather than us.
Rolled or framed?
Rolled canvas arrives in a tube: you paint it flat on a table and stretch or frame it yourself afterwards. The framed option is stretched over a wooden bar before it ships, so you paint on a taut surface and hang it the moment you finish. If it is a gift, framed is the kinder choice.
How long does one take?
Somewhere between a few evenings and a few weeks, depending on size and colour count — the size table above gives an estimate for each. It is a project to keep on a table rather than something to finish in a sitting.
What makes a good photo for this?
Clear light, a strong subject and a background that is not fighting for attention. Busy backgrounds turn into a maze of tiny regions that are miserable to paint. If yours is borderline, send it to us in the chat before you order and we will tell you honestly.
Is it safe for children?
The acrylics are water-based and non-toxic, and they wash out of most things before they dry. The kits still suit older children and adults better — the regions are small and the patience required is real.
